The Cracked moon was done within Softimage starting with a NURBS sphere and trim
surfaces. I then extracted a spline from the trim and extruded the crack inward towards
the sphere's center.
Three textures were used at
approximately 4k resolution. Because we actually enter into the cracked moon the textures
had to gradually change so not to buzz. Mental Ray
helped here in a big way! I animated the displacement map on the sphere's surface to get
the moons craters to work. As well, I also animated the roughness of the texture within
Softimage.
The interior's surface
was blurred along the outer edge by using a Mental Ray lens
shader. As for the sun, I used an FX Director light within Softimage
to get the flare like qualities. The ship, planet and stars
were animated within Softimage and composited in Toonz.
