The Process

Quiet Man has been in business for nearly 7 years. The animation department was created to address a need for content creation in a company that had formerly been known exclusively for its compositing. Since, the company has tightened and streamlined its workflow into it's present state. The services offered through the animation department include production, pre-production, visualization, design and direction. Quiet Man's animation team is relatively small and focused (5 full time artists, and 6 occasional freelancers). The artists each have areas of specialization, yet each maintain a well rounded knowledge in all areas of production. The team is frequently involved in several simultaneous productions meeting all deadlines.

Recent case study: Over the past week and a half, Quiet Man was in full production on 5 animated commercial spots. Another 2 in pre-production and tests on an additional 2 (Dragon's Lair being one of the tests). Imagine all of this with only a team of 9 artists! This tends to be par for the course for us - we have an extremely high volume of output, typically averaging only about 2 weeks of total downtime during a year. This level of production has allowed us to grow into one of the fastest and most efficient boutiques in the commercial production business.

As Project Lead on the Dragon's Lair test, Dave Shirk was responsible for modeling the character, doing shader setup, and motion testing. The entire 10 second project, from modeling, through animation and final render was completed in a week and a half. Only 5 people worked on the test (mostly part-timer's). A Project Lead / Senior Animator (overseeing the entire project), A Technical Director (for character rigging), a Character Modeler, a Shader Developer and an Environment Modeler.
